Camera Critters: Cicada's

DSCN5965

I took these Cicada's at a beach resort in Crete this summer, my father and I went to have a look around the grounds of a hotel behind Costa Beach where we spending some free time on a tour of the beach and Chania Town. Its quite unusual to see Cicada's this close, we mostly just hear the cacophony of "hissing" they make in the trees of tropical countries in the Summer months. They were all over the tree barks in the hotel grounds, apparently the male of the species has a tymbal underneath their main body that expands and contracts making the clicking sound they are famous for.

We call these locust and I don't like them. Although I do like the sound they make in the evening.

I used to think cicadas were only out west....and the noise I heard was high tension wire buzzing....live and learn, eh? nice pic

Jane said...

@ joanne: LOL, well I thought they lived in tropical climates, but appear to be worldwide excluding Antartica. Well never heard them in Scotland that's for sure, we have Crickets whose noise comes from their legs rubbing together.

What a capture! I see and hear them all day long but rarely two together! They are very noisy!

Jane said...

@ Karin: I know, these two were "singing" a lot.

I've never seen them, so this is fascinating. You know you're not in Scotland when you hear cicadas.

@ Linda: LOL, I know. The most we hear is the wind and the rain at the moment, I am really sick of the weather at the moment, louzy Summer-hope it might be better next year.
