Wordless Wednesday: Ruins of West Pier, Brighton [2017]
My sister Sara and I, took a trip down to Brighton for 2 days. We used to live in East Sussex and hadn't seen the city of Brighton for 14 years! This is the ruins of the West Pier which was opened in 1866, and it closed to the public in 1975 ( which was the year I was born in the town itself) due to safety reasons. Sold to a trust in 1983, it was to be 10 years later in March of 2003 that the pier suffered an arson attack, and the picture above is all that's left of this iconic structure now marked by buoys. The Victorian entrance is still standing with a restaurant and a observatory suspended on a pole to view the seafront, which is owned by British Airways.

That is sad seeing the skeleton of the pier, you would have thought they would repair it
@Bill Nicholls: I think its beyond repair now tbh, they did keep the entrance but that's it. I guess they are keeping the ruins for prosperity and a reminder.
I've always wanted to go to Brighton. I kind of like the ruined state of the pier. Looks a bit spooky, especially in black and white.
Nice that you got to return for a visit after so many years. How sad that it was a victim of arson.
I’m surprised it hasn’t been replaced. It will probably happen one day.

Sad to see what is left of a grand structure. The Steel Peer in Atlantic City New Jersey ( where I remember as a child) was an icon that is diminished as well.
Looks like a jungle gym for seabirds!
captivating.
It's rather sad to see historic structures sink into disrepair, especially when something like arson or vandalism led to its demise.
I hope you will share your photos at https://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2017/11/very-zen.html
