Camera Critters: Caribbean Flamingo @ Flamingo Gardens, Florida
Because my sister and I had a late afternoon flight back home, we decided to take a post cruise tour of the Everglades and the Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Florida.
This sweet flamingo came close to us to eat some nibbles being offered by a fellow passenger on the tour.
This special sanctuary in the district of Davie in Florida, brings in birds and other species that have been hurt by either man or other animals and when they recover, they are released back into the wild. If somehow the owners cannot do this, then any offspring born will be released.
This species is a Caribbean Flamingo and his bright scarlet plumage is from the Vitamin A rich shellfish and other food given to him. In the wilds, Flamingo feed on Algae and Algae rich shellfish which characterises its pink plumage. In the sanctuary they slightly over-do their diet, hence the scarlet colouring.

I love that first picture! I bet it was a fun time out there!
great photo!
I can't believe that Flamingo Gardens is still there! I remember many visits as a child in the 1960's. So much of that area of Davie has been developed!! Thanks for the blast from the past.
@ Le Ann: Thanks, it was a great day and since it was the dry season it was a decent temperature too.
@ Two Barking Dogs: You're welcome, yes its still in business and a good thing too since these animals need shelter and some are endangered species like Cougars so they need to be helped.
Awesome captures!
Fur Baby for camera critters. Looking forward to your visit.
Beautiful photos, Jane! I love the bill on the flamingo!
Wow, this bird is so colorful! For me, it is hard to call this a bird because we here in Oregon have nothing close this size with this color. Really good that the refuge is around for the animals too. Thanks for sharing! Here is my entry.
Very colourful birds.
Lovely shots. I lived near the everglades for ten years and visited as much as I could! Wonderful place.
Thanks everyone, yes they had loads of other animals and birds there, and they are well looked after so that's okay.
Beautiful shots! I especially like the first one.
